Our three-year investigation "Verification of Women's Specific Care - from the point of view of the relationship between woman and lymphedema" provided the following:1. This is an accumulation of data collected using physiological indices regarding edema in healthy adult women. Against the background that there had been no data regarding edema in healthy adult women, the study identified the relative factors affecting edema, which may be useful for instruction in the prevention of edema. In 5 adult women, the circumference and pump function of lower extremities, subjective swelling, BMI, muscle rate, and body fat rate were determined in the morning and evening for at least 3 days, and their relationship was analyzed statistically. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the circumference of lower extremities between morning and evening. The pump function of the lower extremities was determined using VRT (venous refill time). VRT was lower in the evening, which did no … More t reach significance. Investigation for relationship between VRT and age, body fat rate, muscle rate, or BMI revealed that there was a negative correlation between VRT and age, body fat rate, and BMI and that there was a positive correlation between VRT and muscle rate (p < 0.001).2. To identify cancer patients'' knowledge of lymphedema, self-care skills, and possible factors associated with lymphedema, we conducted our investigation with the cooperation of 35 members of a cancer patients'' club. The subjects in this study included patients with cervical, corpus uteri, and ovarian cancer, 80% of whom had undergone lymphatic dissection. About 40% of the patients were informed by their physicians of lymphedema preoperatively. Postoperatively, 30% of the patients obtained information from magazines or other patients. As much as 45.7% of the subjects previously had lymphedema including lymphocysts; they visited the hospital for surgery or managed the condition with self-care. Then 80% of the patients attempted preventive care and felt successful at an ever higher rate. Correct knowledge is necessary for self-care. Less
