まず、本研究の目的は以下の通りである。1、方言資料の乏しい地域を選択し、高齢話者の琉球方言の記述的研究を行い、琉球方言資料の増幅に努める。地域としては、北琉球方言からほぼ最北の鹿児島県大島郡笠利町大字用方言、南琉球からほぼ最西南の与那国比川方言とする。特に用方言の資料は少なく、音韻、文法、語彙の体系調査を行いその実態を明らかにする必要がある。与那比川方言においても中心地の祖納方言に比して資料が少ない。また、約30年前の資料であるため、現在の実態を把握したい。2、両方言とも琉球方言の中でも特にバラエティに富んだ音声が多く観察される。これらの特徴的な現象の中には報告はされていてもその要因及び成立について明らかにされていないものもある。それらを両方言、必要であれば他地域の方言資料も比較することにより解明したい。以上の目的を達成すべく、平成18年度は与那国方言、奄美方言(補足)の調査研究を行った。本年度は、以下の調査を実施した。(1).与那国祖納方言、与那国比川方言の音韻体系の調査。(2).笠利町大字用方言、佐仁方言動詞・形容詞の活用体系の補足調査。(3).与那国方言祖納方言、与那国比川方言の語彙調査。以上の調査から当該方言の体系(80歳代以上)を明らかにした。与那国方言は琉球方言の中でも母音の数が最も少なく/a//i//u/の3つであり、子音においても無気喉頭化音、*音が音素として認められる等の特徴が確認された。このように琉球方言の中でも与那国方言はバラエティに富んだ方言である。前年度から調査を行っている奄美方言、ひいてはこれまで調査した琉球諸方言とも比較しながら、琉球方言における言語変化の道筋についても考察した。
