本研究の課題は,戦前期日本の農業機械工業を事例として,地方機械工業と地域工業化の関連を明らかにすることである。特に東京・大阪などの大都市工業圏と対比する形で,在郷の鉄工所・野鍛冶らによって担われてきた地方機械工業の特徴・意義を検討した。研究最終年度の本年度は,国内・海外の資料調査を精力的に実施し,併せてその成果を取りまとめることに努めた。資料調査では,米国国立公文書館,国立国会図書館,(財)三井文庫,立教大学,大阪大学等での関連資料の閲覧・収集を行った。その資料調査の成果を踏まえて,戦前期の農機具・農業機械工場のデータベース化に取り組み,「工揚名」,「経営形態」,「代表者」,「代表者出身地」,「創業年」,「所在地」,「工場面積」,「従業員」,「営業・所得税」,「取引銀行」の各データを時系列で整理した。本データベースを利用することによって,これまでその零細性ゆえに十分に比較・検討することのできなかった地方の中小零細諸工場を包括的に追跡調査することが可能になった。また資料の保存に関しては,貴重文献・資料・マイクロフィルムの電子化保存を行い,資料利用の利便性を高めた。以上の資料調査・整理の成果が,"The Development of the Agricultural Machinery Industry in Prewar Japan"であり,戦前期の農業機械工業の分析から,日本における地方機械工業のダイナミズムが明らかになった。他方,本研究の成果によって,海外アーカイブの所蔵状況,海外研究者の諸研究の理解が深まり,国際比較・関係史の視点から地方機械工業を位置づけ,相対化する必要性を再認識した。次年度以降,本研究を踏まえた新たな視点で,日本機械工業の歴史的な多様性を検討してきたい。

This study focuses on the case study of Japan's agricultural machinery industry in the early stage and the relationship between local machinery industry and regional industrialization. In particular, the characteristics and significance of the local machinery industry are discussed in relation to the metropolitan industrial circles of Tokyo and Osaka. This article discusses the use of small and medium-sized factories in China, including the possibility of tracing. The preservation of valuable documents and data is of great importance, and the convenience of data utilization is high. The results of the above data survey and collation,"The Development of the Agricultural Machinery Industry in Prewar Japan," On the other hand, based on the results of this research, the situation of overseas machinery industry and the research conducted by overseas researchers have gained a deep understanding. From the perspective of international comparison and relationship history, the position of local machinery industry has been established, and the necessity of corresponding transformation has been re-recognized. In the next year, this study will discuss the diversity of the history of Japanese machinery industry from a new perspective.
