白老~勇払海岸沖積低地は,縄文最盛期以降に形成された砂堤列を基底にして頻繁に活動した北海道駒ヶ岳,有珠山および樽前山を起源として過去370 年間で層厚約1.2m の火山灰層で覆われ,17 世紀後半以降数年~数十年間隔で火山災害にさらされ極めて荒廃した環境下にあった。この時期の植生変化として、荒廃した土地に先駆的に出現するカバノキ属の急増と,寒冷な気候を思わせるトウヒ属の微増が示されており、火山活動による土地の荒廃のなかで地球的規模の気候変動として小氷期を反映していると考えた。
