Research and Study of Collections and Documents Surrounding Photographer Mastusaburo Yokoyama in His Family Household

Matsusaburo Yokoyama (1838-1884), a photographer active at the end of the Edo through the beginning of the Meiji periods, studied the most advanced techniques of the time in photography, oil painting, and printing. His family home, located in Ashiya, Hyogo prefecture, holds a large number of articles and documents relevant to his life and work.The collections at the Yokoyama household range from wet-collodion glass plates, photo albums, oil paintings, lithographs, and printing plates, to diaries and notebooks. The primary goal of this study was to enumerate and disclose the heretofore unknown works and documents that the Yokoyama residence houses. Another was to establish a foundation for further study of Matsusaburo Yokoyama by verifying his various activities and creating a database of the information. A third was to conserve these historically valuable collections and documents, protecting them from further damage and dissipation. On the basis of these observations, a fourth was to digitally photograph, measure, and identify the use of each object.
