It is largely due to his profound knowledge of English literature that Nitobe was able to play the role of a spokesman for the League of Nations, at the time of its inauguration and even earlier than that. At that time its temporary headquarters was in London. The U.S. had cancelled her membership notwithstanding the fact that the whole idea was initially advocated by President Wilson. France and Italy had been slow to appoint each their undersecretary general. There were only two in July 1919 who should prepare for the League of Nations, which was to start next January. They were Eric Drummond, appointed Secretary General, and Nitobe, appointed one of the three undersecretaries general and left in London because his country was too distant. The atmosphere in Europe generally was one of skepticism about the potential of the League. Even Britain, in spite of the fact that she was to be the leading member, had many cynics. It was necessary for the League to sell itself in advance of its inauguration. At this critical moment, Nitobe was a much sought after lecturer in English because of his knowledge of English literature and of Western thought in general. The Secretary General, fourteen years younger than Nitobe, had had a brilliant career with a Foreign Office background, but that was limited to practical matters in foreign policies. Nitobe increasingly took on the lecturing mantle on behalf of the League of Nations team, both in Britain and on the continent. It is not too much to say that it was Nitobe who established the lofty aspirations of the League at its start. From this point of view, I traced the influence on Nitobe of several great writers of English literature : Shakespeare, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Rudyard Kipling, and Nitobe's contemporary poet Longfellow.
