シロイヌナズナ葉を(E)-2-ヘキセナール処理すると、NADPHオキシダーゼ特異的に過酸化水素の蓄積がおこり、これが引き金となって細胞膜カルシウムチャネルが開口し、カルシウムイオンの流入が引き起こされることを明らかとした。その後、還元型グルタチオン量が一過的に減少し、こうした一連の応答が防御遺伝子誘導につながることが示唆された。またメチルビニルケトンなどのα,β-不飽和カルボニル化合物が同様の機構で植物をプライミングすることが示され、新規植物化学調節物質としての可能性を提唱することができた
