An association study of the cytokine genes in patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Schizophrenia has been hypothesized as a neuro-developmental disorder. A number of anatomical alternations in neuro-pathological and neuro-imaging studies have supported this theory. Various cytokine plays an important role for the development of central nervous system. The Helper T cell cytokine (Th cytokine) expression levels are altered in patients with schizophrenia. We investigated the association between IL-2 rs2069762, IL4 rs2243250, TGF-beta1 rs4803455, TGF-beta1 rs2241716, TGF-beta1 rs1800469 and schizophrenia in Japanese.Methods : The subjects were 193 patients with schizophrenia, 69 patients with atypical psychosis and 123 normal control. Genomic DNA was isolated from whole blood. The genotyping of cytokine genes were examined by the fluorescence resonance energy transfer method.Results: As a result of analysis, the frequencies of IL-2 rs2069762, IL4 rs-2243250, TGF-beta1 rs4803455, TGF-beta1 rs1800469 between schizophrenia group, atypical psychosis group and normal control group showed no differences. TGF-beta1 rs2241716 polymorphism was associated with atypical psychosis.Conclusion: Our results suggest that TGF-beta1 rs2241716 polymorphisms might be involved in vulnerability of atypical psychosis.
