项目摘要

本研究員は、日本近世後期小説の構成や様式を分析し、当時の出版状況などを踏まえ考究することによって、この期の戯作者の文学史的位置づけを見直し、近世後期小説の特徴を総括的に把握することを目標としている。昨年度より引き続き、柳亭種彦が私淑し、彼の作品にも多大な影響を与えた山東京伝を研究対象とした。この研究は、彼の読本代表作である『桜姫全伝曙草紙』をとりあげ、これまで指摘されてこなかった新たな典拠を提示したうえで、彼の戯作制作の方法を明らかにし、さらにそれを当時の江戸戯作全体にひろげ考えたものであり、これを「『桜姫全伝曙草紙』の方法」として論文にまとめ、『近世文芸』に投稿し、現在審査中である。また、文化文政期(1804〜1830)の合巻について、どの版元からどのような作者がどれだけの作品を出しているのか、時代における内容の傾向変化はあるのかなどを調べるため、海外も含め各地をまわり出来る限り原本にあたって内容を確認し、当時の出版目録や版本の巻末にある刊行目録をもとに正確な合巻目録を作成した。この成果は「文化文政期合巻出版目録(仮題)」として発表する予定である。さらに、竹塚東子という戯作者に注目した。この戯作者はこれまでほとんど注目されることもなく、翻刻も皆無といってよいが、当時の出版状況をまとめてみると、合巻の形式が確立してゆく文化期に毎年数編の作品を発表し再版もされるなど、活躍した人物であることに気付いた。そこで、当時の資料に基づきながら、その本質が全く知られていない竹塚東子という戯作者を明らかにしてゆくと同時に、作品の翻刻を進めている。文化文政期の合巻界を支えたのは京伝や種彦といった有名な作者ばかりではなく、このようなあまり知られていない戯作者の存在も大きく、これらの作者や作品を明らかにすることによって、当時の合巻を総括的にとらえることができると考えている。
