1、環境人類学の諸理論、及び中国東南部の環境問題や、風水思想と環境問題の関係についての先行研究を整理し、それらの問題点や、自身の研究に援用するべき点を把握した。2、先行研究には、風水思想を環境保護の思想であると認識し、環境問題への寄与に無条件の期待を寄せる傾向があった。これに対し、『葬書』や『発微論』など、現代においても影響力を保つ風水理論書の古典を分析することにより、風水思想が必ずしも単純に「環境保護」或いは「環境破壊」に繋がるものではなく、むしろ「環境改造」を志向するような面を持つことを確認した。一方で、中国では歴代の知識人が風水思想を批判し、また歴代の政権が、風水思想の流行を禁圧してきたが、風水思想に基づいて環境が改変されることへの憂慮は、批判や禁圧の論拠として、近年まで主流ではなかったことを明らかにした。3、主たる研究対象地域であり、「風水思想による環境破壊の助長」とされる現象が、1990年代から問題化している中国浙江省に出張した。同省北部の杭州市・紹興市・寧波市・奉化市に赴き、風水思想を採り入れた墓地開発や都市開発(特に前者)が、現地の環境に与えた影響について、実地調査や、文献資料の収集や、現地の研究者との懇談を行った。4、上記地域との比較対象として、環境保護政策において先んじる台湾台北市に出張した。第一に、風水思想を採り入れた墓地開発や都市開発が、現地の環境に与えた影響について、第二に、墓地の増加・拡大や乱立に伴う環境破壊を、行政がどのように防止しようとし、また現地の文化人類学者や葬祭業者が、「住民の風水信仰を尊重しながら、なおかつ環境破壊に繋がりにくいような墓葬方式」を、どのように行政や住民に提案してきたかについて、実地調査や、文献資料の収集や、現地の研究者との懇談を行った。研究代表者は、本年度(初年度)の末で日本学術振興会特別研究員-PDを辞退した。
