ニホンザルでは、子ザルが離乳期を迎える頃になると、授乳を求める子ザルと離乳を求める母ザルとの間に葛藤が生じる。この離乳をめぐる母ザルとの葛藤において、子ザルは初めて、他個体との激しい利害の対立を経験する。母ザルとの間に生起する葛藤に対して子ザルがどのように対処しているのかを明らかにするために、1歳齢の子ザルと母ザル15組の授乳をめぐる相互交渉を観察し、総計225時間分の個体追跡データを得た。分析の結果、(1)母ザルが子ザルの授乳要求を受け入れるかどうかは、母ザルの状況によって異なることが明らかになった。一方で、(2)子ザルは、母ザルの状況の変化に応じて授乳要求を行うタイミングを調節していた。この事実は、母ザルが寛容な態度をとりやすい状況と拒否的な態度をとりやすい状況とを子ザルが認知していて、葛藤が生じにくい状況をねらって子ザルが授乳要求を行っていることを意味している。さらに11組の母子ペアを対象に、授乳をめぐる母子相互交渉を子ザルの誕生から2歳齢まで縦断的に観察し、総計570時間分の個体追跡データを収集した。その結果、(3)子ザルは、成長とともに、母ザルの状況に合わせた上手な授乳要求ができるように発達していることが明らかになった。子ザルは、生後半年間は母ザルの状況とは関係なく授乳要求を行っていた。一方で、母ザルの拒否行動が頻発する1歳齢になると、子ザルは、母ザルが採食をしている時ではなく、他個体から毛づくろいを受けている時に頻繁に授乳要求を行うようになった。この結果は、授乳をめぐる母ザルとの葛藤を通して、子ザルが「他個体(母ザル)との利害の対立に対処する能力」を発達的に獲得していくことを示していると考えられた。
