ヒト以外の霊長類の社会性を明らかにすることは、ヒトの本性の解明に繋がる。本研究の目的は、寛容性の高い集団で暮らす野生ニホンザルと寛容性の低い集団で暮らす野生ニホンザルを同じ方法で観察し比較することによって、社会の寛容性が個体の行動や子育ての仕方に与える影響を検討することである。本年度は、勝山ニホンザル集団(岡山県真庭市に171頭生息)の母子を対象に運搬行動を調べた。ニホンザルの母親が行う子の運搬には、腹部に子を接触させながらの運搬(腹部運搬)と背部に子を接触させながらの運搬(背部運搬)の2つの様式がみられた。運搬行動は霊長類が行う特徴的な養育行動であるが、2種類の運搬行動を利用して子育てを行う霊長類種は限られている。ニホンザルの場合、母ザルによる運搬行動は、子ザルの成長に応じて、腹部運搬から背部運搬へ変化していた。さらに、運搬行動には個体差が見られ、母ザルの養育スタイルと密接に関連していた。頻繁に背部運搬を行うことによって子ザルとの近接関係を維持している母ザルが存在することが示された。今後は、運搬行動以外の養育行動に関しても分析を行い、勝山集団の母ザルが行う養育行動の特徴を描き出す。さらに本年度は、淡路島ニホンザル集団(兵庫県洲本市に160頭生息)を対象としたフィールドワークを開始した。給餌場面を観察した結果、淡路島集団の凝集性は勝山集団の凝集性よりも高いことが示唆された。今後は、個体識別を完成させて、養育行動に関するより詳細な観察を行う。
