项目摘要

平成二十年度では、まず日本近世の「鬼神論」(神霊信仰をめぐる儒教的知識人の解釈的言説)についての先行研究の整理と、資料の再検討とを行なった。結果、従来指摘されていたほど近世知識人の「世俗化」のプロセスは単純ではなく、神霊の肯定否定いずれにせよ文脈次第で意味が大きく異なり、そうした単純な対立で分類するのではなく、その言説の発せられる場の性質に注目する必要性が確認された。日本宗教学会における発表で論じた、近世後期の戯作者曲亭馬琴の事例は、まさにそういう一面的な捉え方の問題性を示している。馬琴の言説もまた広い意味で「鬼神論」と呼べるが、馬琴は趣味的知識人であり、その言説の場は戯作と考証随筆に限られていた。それゆえ、既に18世紀に蓄積された「鬼神論」のみならず、膨大な漢籍からも多くの論を採り入れてはいるものの、先行説を論理的に進めるというよりは自らの宗教的世界観にひきつけた独自の理解を見せる。秋からは論文「秋成の「神秘思想」における二つの神語り」を執筆。上田秋成についての論が中心であるが、主に彼の論敵であった本居宣長との対比、および両者が言外に強く意識していた無神論的知識人の影響を重視し、内容ではなく語り口にこそ、神霊をめぐる言説の歴史における重要な変化があったことを論じている。この秋成の例が示すように、当時問題であったのは神霊が存在するか否かという単純な問いではなく、古代的な知と当代的な知のどちらを以て生きるべきか、或いは文字文化の発達によって信用されなくなる物語的な知をどう扱うかといった、近代化過程につきまとう普遍的な問いでもあった。中でも秋成や宣長の到達した地点は、まぎれもなく近世後期を代表するものの一つであり、それは中世から近代へと至る神霊観の変遷の決定的な折り返し地点が、近世後期のこの場に見られることをも意味する。以上のことを明らかにし、予定されていた研究課題を全うした。
