液晶性-非晶性および液晶性-液晶性ブロック共重合体において、液晶化過程におけるミクロ相分離構造の変化・維持、ミクロ相分離構造と液晶構造の関係およびミクロ相分離内での液晶の配向様式を、主としてシンクロトロン放射光を用いた時分割小角X線散乱法により解析し、ミクロ相分離と液晶化の相関によって生じる階層構造とその形成過程を明らかにした。
