被子植物の雌蕊における花粉管伸長の様式の多様性と受精様式について、特にブナ目のヤマモモ科、ブナ科、Tidodendraceaeについて研究を行った。その結果、花粉管は、胚珠の発生と成熟に伴い、柱頭から胚嚢まで3-5段階の断続的伸長によりただ1本に減数して受精すること、受精遅延と花粉管の断続伸長は雌雄配偶体(花粉管及び胚珠内胚嚢)の選抜に重要な役割を果たしていること、断続伸長における花粉管の休止位置は近い系統群内では一致していることが明らかになった。
