降河回遊性のウナギ属魚類と両側回遊性のボウズハゼ(Sicyopterus japonicus)について、フィールドワークを通じた生活史および生態に関する研究を行った。その結果、ボウズハゼの生活史は熱帯のボウズハゼ亜科魚類の生活史と異なり、完全に四季に対応した生活史を持つことが明らかになった。また、ボウズハゼ亜科魚類はヨシノボリ属魚類やアユと同様の両側回遊魚であるが、両者の仔魚期の海洋生活様式には本質的に大きな違いがあった。すなわち、ボウズハゼ亜科魚類は海洋生活期に大規模に分散して,全く母川回帰はないが、ヨシノボリ属魚類やアユは、海域での分散は少なく、結果として母川に回帰する傾向があるものと考えられた。ボウズハゼ亜科魚類の海洋生活期の大規模分散はウナギ属魚類と類似しており、さらに、この特性はボウズハゼ亜科魚類が熱帯島嶼域に広い分布域を持つに至った理由の一つと考えられた。
