本研究の目的は、19世紀前半に蝦夷地に赴任した武士の記録をもとに、幕藩権力(松前藩)と「場所」構成員(アイヌ、和人漁民)との関係を考察することにある。具体的には、(1)蝦夷地の行政および地域的な紛争解決、(2)異国船渡来時の対応に関する検討を課題としている。上記の課題のもと、本年度は4件の史料調査を実施した。まず、課題(1)に関連した3件の調査がある。(1)2007年7月の北海道別海町加賀家資料館における調査では、子モロ場所通詞・加賀傳蔵の手になる史料をデジタルカメラで撮影した。ニシベツ川の資源をめぐる争論に関する史料を中心に、「場所」の行政に関わる史料を対象とした。続いて、(2)2007年12月には滋賀大学経済学部附属史料館において、藤野家文書「御用留」に関する調査を実施した。(1)と同じ子モロ場所関連の史料であり、蝦夷地の〈文書行政〉を考えていくうえで重要な内容である。そして、(3)2008年2月には、東北大学附属図書館狩野文庫において、第二次幕領期の蝦夷地に赴任した幕府役人による記録を調査した。(1)とも関わるが、蝦夷地の境界画定の経緯および方法に関する史料が含まれており、幕藩権力とアイヌとの関係を考察するうえで重要である。また、課題(2)に関連して、(4)2008年3月にオーストラリアNSW州立図書館ミッチェルライブラリーにおける調査を実施、蝦夷地に渡来した捕鯨船の航海日誌や新聞記事を複写した。捕鯨船の渡来が相次いだ近世後期、異国船の渡来という非常時の動向を考えることで、蝦夷地の社会像に新たな論点を提示できるのではないかと考える。以上の調査成果の一部は、北海道大学文学研究科提出・課程博士学位論文「近世後期の蝦夷地と松前藩」(2008年3月)に反映させている。未公開の調査成果については、学位論文収録の新稿とともに、早期の発表を目指していきたい。
