本研究の目的は「日本古代・中世移行期において「国」レベルに分節化されていく祭祀制度の意義を解明すること」にある。古代・中世の日本社会に存在した重層的な祭祀構造を明らかにするためには、まず国家と地域社会の交点に置かれた祭祀制度を解明する必要がある。本年度はその第一の作業として、1、神戸の網羅的研究(資料の集成と現地調査)2、九・十世紀の国内宗教秩序の研究(文献資料の再検討)を中心に行い、従来充分に解明されてこなかった移行期の国衙祭祀に古代史側からアプローチした。1では、大同元年牒という資料を台帳として、諸史料を収集・整理した表を作成した。また関連する現地の調査・見学を行った(島根県青木遺跡・岡山県吉備津神社・長崎梁壱岐島内の式内社・福岡県元岡遺跡群等)。それらの成果の一部は「古代神戸の性格と分布」としてまとめている(近日投稿予定)。2では、法制史料の再検討により、九世紀後半に各国ごとに国司のもとで祭祀・法会が創り出され、拠点として名神が突出してくる過程を研究した。また説話や縁起を読み直すことで、(1)国衙での祭祀・法会は国司の俸給である公解の寄進によって創設されること、(2)寄進は国内各郡へ祭祀・法会料を課す形態として実現すること、(3)よって祭祀・法会の維持は国内の収取制度の維持と密接に関わること、が初めて明らかとなった。以上の成果の一部は「国司祭祀の成立と展開」としてまとめ、平成20年3月提出の博士論文「古代国家地方祭祀の研究」の一部となっている。以上の研究により、国衙祭祀の基礎的・制度的な前握が具体的に明らかになってきた。
