近世後期における武家の女性の実態やジェンダーの仕組みについて、薩摩藩島津家を事例として、分析を進めた。その結果、側室の中には、藩内で正室格として処遇される者が存在したが、幕府への公式な手続きを経た正室と違い、幕府との儀礼という政治的役割は担えなかったこと、幕府との儀礼や島津家の縁組決定過程の分析から、大名家の「奥」と江戸城大奥とを結ぶ奥向のルートの構築過程と、表向のルート及び奥向のルートの利用形態を具体的に明らかにした。また、当該時期・地域の庶民の家について、建築構造面から家の間取りを比較し、「表」と「奥」に明確に区分された大名家の家と、区分のない庶民の家という階層性の違いを明らかにした。さらに、近代初期における島津家について分析した。その結果、邸宅における「表」と「奥」の空間分離や、「表」と「奥」それぞれに対応した職制の存在が見られ、近世のジェンダーの仕組みが引き継がれていた。また、一家の掟である家憲の分析によると、明治期の家憲では、母親が未成年の家主の後見人となり得たが、大正期の家憲では、後見人は親族・分家の男性に限定された。これは法制面での変化であるが、実態面での変化はどうであったのかを今後明らかにする必要がある。以上のように、今年度の研究では、近世後期と近代の一時期における武家社会の女性やジェンダーについて明らかにした。今後も、通時的な視点で引き続き幕末期や近代の分析を進めていきたい。
