短時間作用型β1遮断薬(交感神経の緊張を弱める薬)による心筋保護作用と各種麻酔薬の影響を動物実験と臨床において検討した。短時間作用型β1遮断薬は明らかな心筋保護作用を示したが, この作用は揮発性吸入麻酔薬(ガス麻酔薬の一種類)により部分的に減弱する可能性がある。虚血性心疾患患者においては揮発性吸入麻酔薬を用いた全身麻酔よりも静脈麻酔薬による全身麻酔中に短時間作用型β1遮断薬を静脈内持続投与した方法がより安全であることが示唆された。
