わが国における「父親の育児」研究は、主にジェンダー論的観点と発達論的観点から進められてきた。前者は、子どもの愛着発達において同時に複数の愛着対象をもつという「ソーシャルネットワークモデル」に立ち、母子関係を超えた枠組みにおいて父親と子どもとの関係性をとらえようとする観点である。後者は、家事・育児分担における不平等性を明らかにし、そこに潜むジェンダーの問題をとらえようとする観点である。本研究では、後者の観点から父親の育児の実態を明らかにするが、最終的には両者を統合し、「父親の不在」の解決を目指す支援のあり方とその有効性を探ることを目指した。本研究では、都市部に包摂されない地方小都市における父親の育児実態を明らかにした。調査対象地域であるX市は農漁村地域や離島地域を含む一方で乱新興住宅地も含み、地域ごとに家族構成、父母の職業、ネットワークが異なっていた。主な知見として、第一に、末子の年齢が小さく、核家族の父親ほど子どもの世話をする傾向にあった。第二に、性別役割分業意識が弱い父親ほど子どもの世話を行う傾向にあった。第三に、専門職に従事している父親ほど子どもとの交流が多く、子どもの要求に敏感に応じる育児方法を実践していた。第四に、母親のフルタイム就労は父親の育児参加度を進める要因にはならず、特に土着方地域において「父母は働き、祖母が育児を行う」という業が行われていた。一方、母親だちは「祖母」よりは「母親による育児」と「父親の育児協力」を望む傾向にあった。第六に、帰宅時間が父親の育児参加の最大の規定要因であるが、収入の確保なしには仕事と子育ての両立は難しい現状にあり、特に中小企業の両立支援を整備していく必要性が示された。行政による父親め育児支援策は「家庭教育支援」と「雇用環境の整備」が中心であるが、より有効性のある子育て支援として地方小都市では子育て家庭の生活を支える「地域の活性化」も必要であることが明らかにされた。
