本研究の目的は、1990年代以降から「父親の育児奨励論」が盛んに唱えられる状況において、父親自身も内面化しつつある「子どもにかかわる父親」という文的規範が父親の育児不安感に及ぼす影響を明らかにすることであった。本研究は質問紙法にて行われ、三重県鳥羽市全域の保育所および幼稚園に通う子どもをもつ770世帯を対象として、委託留置調査法にて2004年9月に行われた。対象となった770世帯のうち431世帯の票を回収した(回収率:56.0%)。主な結果は以下の通りである。第一に「父親の育児奨励論」の内面化について、「子育ての責任は父親も負うべき」という父親自身による育児責任についての認識は高く、父親の育児参加の重要性についても肯定する父親が多かった。一方で、父親役割の内容では、子育てにおける性差をどのように捉えるかをめぐって二極化していることが明らかになった。第二に、父親の育児参加の実態では、「平日顔を合わせるよう努力する」などの子どもへの接近、「人への迷惑を叱る」などの規制において育児参加は進んでいるものの、「食事の世話」などの日常的な世話では育児参加率は低いことが明らかになった。第三に父親の育児不安については、約90%以上の父親が子どもと安定した関係を築いていると感じており、父子間の愛着関係形成にいての不安を感じる者は少ない。一方で、約70%以上の父親は子どもにかかわれないことをストレスに感じ、約50%の父親が子どもへの叱り方などの親として子どもへの関わり方に不安を抱いていた。また、子どもの発達についても「気がかりなことがある」とする父親が約50%存在するなど、子どもの発達について父親として少なからずの不安を感じていることが明らかになった。以上より、「父親の育児奨励論」を内面化し、子育てにおける父親の重要性を認識する父親は多いが、実際の育児においては接近や規制が中心であり、世話や遊びというレベルでのかかわりは薄いと言える。その状況において、「父親の育児奨励論」の内面化によって、自らが理想とする親役割を果たせないことに葛藤する父親の存在も伺えた。このような葛藤は親としての発達の原動力として位置づけられるが、親役割遂行あるいは子どもへの不安感を軽減するためには、父親を育児の主体者として位置づけた子育て支援が求められる。
