絵画の画面を洗浄することは、保存修復におけるさまざまな処置の中でも、非常に「積極的」な介入であり、何らかの危険を伴うものといえる。数多い洗浄のための溶剤や方法のなかで、絵画に与える影響が最も少なく効果的な材料と方法を選択するためには、その絵画を構成する物質や取り除くべき物質、あるいは周辺環境といった関係要因を考慮に入れ、論理的に最適な答えを導く必要がある。また、その材料が絵画に与える影響についても評価を行うことが不可欠といえる。本研究では、まず、研究対象とするユーラシア地域の練り土製の壁に描かれたセッコ壁画(特にシルクロード地域の各石窟壁画)の材質と黒色付着物に関する一連の自然科学的な分析を行った。今回の材質研究により、中央アジアの壁画に乾性油や鉛石鹸、天然樹脂と考えられる材料が使用されたことを初めて明らかにした。乾性油が用いられた最古の彩色事例として重要な成果となった。分析にあたり、欧州シンクロトロン放射光施設(ESRF)およびカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校(UCLA)の施設を利用した。材質分析を踏まえ、バーミヤーン仏教壁画の保存修復を事例として、さまざまな洗浄剤やゲル化剤など基材を用いた洗浄試験を行った。セッコ壁画に付着する黒色物質が多糖類を主体とする物質であることを同定し、各種の試験の結果、壁画を傷めないように除去するための洗浄剤として、ブチルアミンを主体とする有機溶剤、塩基性w/o型エマルション、水を用いた洗浄剤、計3種を選択した。ゲル化剤を高吸水性シートに付着させた洗浄シートの試作、バーミヤーン遺跡N(a)窟の壁画保存修復作業において試用した。
