建設物を事例に、経済社会における物質フローおよびストックを定量化するモデルを構築して将来のシナリオ分析を行い、建設資材に関わる中長期的な物質管理戦略について検討した。建設物の寿命を今後20年で1.2倍にするだけでも物質の需要量や廃棄物の発生量を10%から数10%削減できること、将来道路建設が縮小されることを想定すると、建設鉱物系廃棄物のリサイクルについて需給の不釣り合いが生じる可能性があることなどを示した。
