本研究では、中世末〜近世前期における東国の土地制度と村落の社会構造を、畿内近国との比較を念頭において分析した。具体的には、とくに飯田市歴史研究所に所蔵されている平沢文書をとりあげ、信州伊那郡虎岩郷(現、長野県飯田市下久堅)の土地制度と社会構造の解明を進めた。その結果、これまでの研究史の成果をかなりの程度、再検討・修正することになり、当該期の東国における土地制度と村落のあり方について、より妥当で明確なイメージを提供しうる知見を得た。
