ナノからサブミクロンサイズの物質はサイズの減少に伴う体積減少や表面変化によって、多くの物性および機能においてバルク体とは異なる性質を示す。本研究では、新奇な磁気機能の獲得を目指して、直径500nm程度の金属酸化物及び金属からなる中空球殻磁性体の化学合成をおこなった。このような中空球に関して物性を測定したところ、バルクには見られない中空球構造に特異な磁気物性や光物性(太陽電池特性や光触媒能など)を見出すことができた。
