スピネル構造をとる様々な遷移金属酸化物において、新奇な軌道秩序を新たに見出した。また、その軌道秩序状態のドメインを磁場によって制御し、巨大な磁歪、磁気誘電性を得ることに成功した。さらに、強誘電性と強誘電性が共存したマルチフェロイク物質において第二高調波発生(SHG)を初めて観測した。さらに、SHG顕微鏡の開発を進めて、深さ方向も含めた3次元断層写真を得ることに成功した。
