To understand in vivo function of versican, a large proteoglycan in the extracellular matrix, we generated analyzed its conditional knockout mice. Through their analyses, we found that versican regulates BMP- and TGFβ-mediated signaling and plays crucial roles in several steps of cardiac development, chondrogenesis, and joint morphogenesis.
