小学5年から高校3年生(1,412人)を対象に、共感性と情動の安定性を評価した。社会性・情動は成長に伴って向上することが確認された。また、共感性・社会性が低いほど、攻撃性が高く、抑うつ傾向が高いことが分かった。一方、社会性に障害をみる自閉症者に対する脳画像研究(PET画像)を実施した。その結果、自閉症者では、広汎な脳部位でマイクログリアの活性が亢進していることが認められ、脳の神経炎症が障害の形成に関与していることが示唆された。
