X線上の膝OA変化と軟骨・骨の代謝マーカーである尿中CTX-II・NTX-I値との関連を、約1000名の住民検診群と、約100名の骨粗鬆症性骨折の患者群で検討した。CTX-IIはOAが進行するにつれて、特に閉経後女性において高値となった。ただし、両群とも80歳を超える高齢者では、進行したOAが多いこともあり、OAの程度とマーカーとの関連を認めなかった。CTX-IIは膝OAのマーカーとして閉経後から80歳程度までの女性で有用と考えられた。また、骨粗鬆症患者においては、同年代の一般住民群に比べ有意ではないがややCTX-IIが高値の傾向を認め、膝OAとの緩やかな関連が示唆された。
