本研究により、1968/69年の中部太平洋における核実験起源炭素14蓄積量が明らかにされた。それらを1973年の観測データと比較した結果、1968年から1973のわずか5年間に、水深500m付近まで表層で、大気中核実験起源炭素14が速やかに増加していたことがわかった。試料保存法に問題があったために定量的な議論には限界があったが、本研究で得られた炭素14の経年変化に関わる知見、試料前処理法の検討結果等は今後の研究進展に資することが期待される。
