熊本県天草下島沿岸域に周年定住するミナミハンドウイルカが2年間で26頭(年平均13頭)混獲されたことが漁業者への聞き取り調査から推察された. 本個体群の多くのイルカは背びれの傷をもとに個体識別されており, 個体数は200頭余りと小さい. 本個体群では, 混獲などの人為的要因による死亡数が2頭を超えると個体群が減少する可能性がある. 年平均混獲数13頭はこの値を大きく上回っている. 混獲対策が緊急課題であることが明らかになった.
