19世紀イギリスの代表的な小説家、ジョージ・エリオット(1819-80)とジャーナリストでもあり作家でもあったハリエット・マーティノウ(1802-76)の「帝国意識」を探ることで、当時の文学とジャーナリズム、政治の関係を明らかにした。二人ともイギリス人の卓越性を信じ、それがイギリスの帝国支配を正当化する根拠となっている。しかし、民族支配の問題は階級およびジェンダーの問題と本質的に同じであることを洞察し、他者に対する寛容性を最も重視することで、独善的な帝国主義イデオロギーに染まるのを回避していたことが明らかになった。
