530 Japanese university students evaluated western and Asian non-Japanese recounting identical monologues in Japanese for 11 items in 5 situations. Evaluations differed significantly across situation but in all situations western non-Japanese were evaluated more positively. This gap in ratings was constant across situations for evaluations of "activeness," "oplnlon," and "seriousness of the issue," indicating a similar effect of speaker type for these items. Evaluations of speaker "ability" and "Japanese behavior," however, fluctuated to a greater degree across situation for Asian non-Japanese, indicating a non-consistent effect of speaker type for these items.
