Publishers as Gatekeepers of Scholarly Information

本研究以日本四家学术出版商的密集案例研究为基础。研究结果显示，要深入探讨出版社作为学术传播守门人的角色，需要分析各出版社的二元组合策略与组织身份。学术出版商的二元资产组合由若干经济资本和非经济资本构成。文化-商业和工艺-官僚构成学术出版商组织身份的两个关键轴心。

This study builds on intensive case studies of four scholarly publishers in Japan. Findings of this study shows that in order to delve into the role of publishers as gatekeepers of scholarly communication, one needs to analyze the making of the dualistic portfolio strategy and organizational identity of each publisher. The dualistic portfolio of scholarly publisher consists of a number of economic and non-economic capitals. The culture-commerce and craft-bureaucracy constitute two crucial axes of the organizational identity of the scholarly publisher.
