中部日本とその周辺の鮮新・更新統から大型植物化石群(種実類・葉)を採取して地質層序学的に位置づけ, 同時代の植物化石群の種組成を地域間で比較した. その結果, 前期更新世前半には中部地方の東北側と南西側でフロラの分化がすでに始まっていたが, 地質学的資料から積雪環境が顕著になったと考えられる, 約120万年前から100万年前にかけて日本海側と太平洋側の植生やフロラの分化が顕著になったことが明らかになった.
