富山県高岡市の玄手川(延長3km)は農業用排水路で、効率的な排水処理と、小魚のトミヨや水草のナガエミクリを中心とした生態系の保全の両立を目的として、水路底の80%をコンクリートとする近自然工法で改修された。また、中流部100mには水路底を砂利舗装とした生態系保護区が設けられた。施工前後約10 年間にわたるモニタリングの結果、近自然工法については、湧水は元に戻り、堆砂は適度で、トミヨやナガエミクリなどの生態系は回復した。排水処理のための水草刈りは、やり易くなったとの農家の評価であった。生態系保護区(ワンド)については、植生は近自然工法の本川よりす早く回復し、トミヨは施工前より倍以上の密度となった。また、水路断面の詳細流速分布調査から、水草内領域における流速は、水草外領域の流速の約3割であり、トミヨが長時間遊泳できる流速(巡航速度)が水草内領域で実現されていることがわかった。以上から、近自然工法と生態系保護区(ワンド)を組み合わせたミチゲーション(影響緩和)手法」が排水処理と生態系保全の双方に効果的であることがわかった。
