ブラジル原産の伝承薬T. avellanedae の細胞を培養することにより抗がん活性をもつ5-hydroxy-2-(1-hydroxyethyl)-naphtho[2,3-b]-furan-4,9-dione(NQ801)を効率的に生産する方法の開発を行った。この化合物あるいはT. avellanedae の抽出物を用い、様々な腫瘍細胞に対する毒性試験、がん初期抗原発現抑制試験、マウスを用いた抗腫瘍活性試験を行った。その結果、本植物の医薬素材としての応用の可能性が広がった。
