明治維新とは、地域社会の人びとにとってどのような体験であり、どのような意味を持ったか、小倉藩(領)を事例として、城下町の構造とその変化、長州戦争や戊辰戦争への動員・参加を中心に検討した。後者については、そのような体験がどのように語られ、記憶されたかという問題に主眼を置いた。小倉城自焼、藩士退却、藩庁移転という「敗戦」の記憶を、幕府に対する「尽忠」の物語によって克服しようとしたことが具体的に明らかになった。
