信仰学校(faith school)に対する国の政策、設置に関する地方行政の対応、信仰学校の実態等を研究することにより次の3点を明らかにした。第一に、イギリス社会において信仰学校は教育の私事性を拡大する存在として認識されていること。第二に、しかしながら、信仰学校の設置が認められている背景には、教育効果やニーズや社会的一体性(social cohesion)などの複数要因を総合的に判断して公教育制度をよりよいものにしようとする教育行政機関の考えが反映されていること。第三に、今後の信仰学校の課題としては、各宗教団体の利害を超えた教育供給主体としての責任、すなわち教育の公共性への関与が積極的に求められていること。これらを通じて、イギリスにおける教育の公共性議論がどのように展開されているのかの一端を明らかにできた。
