Modern synthesis/molecule chemistry is no longer conceivable without single crystal structure analysis by means of X-ray diffraction, at least since the end of the 1970s. It has long since become the most important method for determining the linkage of atoms in a molecule, in addition to the analysis of structural parameters. From this point of view, single crystal X-ray structure analysis is a routine analytical method that no chemical institute should be without. The single crystal X-ray structure analysis belongs to the central services (ZD) at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Rostock, which are organised by Prof. Dr. Schulz. Part of the ZD, is the department of single crystal X-ray diffraction, which is headed by PD Dr. Alexander Villinger. It should be pointed out that the Department of Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction functions as a service facility for the entire University of Rostock, i.e. it serves requests from the field of chemistry (especially inorganic and organic chemistry), but also from all other disciplines (physics, material sciences, etc.). With this application, we are requesting a replacement for a device (Kappa APEX II, Bruker AXS) that was put into operation in 2008. This device is unfortunately at the end of its service life, which is expressed, among other things, that it has stopped working extremely often in recent years due to problems, as it is extraordinarily susceptible to faults and repairs, which sometimes led to the fact that no measurement of single crystals was possible for a period of 6 months(!), as our second diffractometer from the Bruker company also stopped due to a defective detector. This led to a very strong impairment of the scientific work and many problems in the execution of BSc, MSc and PhD theses. In addition, the many repairs led to high costs, which a small institute like ours can hardly afford. The replacement should ensure that the chemically oriented sciences and also the neighbouring disciplines of the University of Rostock will continue to be provided with modern diffractometer equipment in the future.
