本研究では河井寬次郎の創作活動を、特に技術思想と「生命」概念という観点から読み解くことで、彼の自然観を明らかにする。本年度は研究対象を、彼が自ら「思想上の転機」と考える、太平洋戦争末期の活動に絞り調査を進めた。当該時期には、制作の中断が余儀なくされたため、河井の当時の日誌（未公刊、河井寬次郎記念館所蔵）や著作などの文献を中心資料として、河井自身の立場から思索の変遷を明らかにすることを試みた。まずは所蔵者の協力のもと、当該時期の日誌を精読した。日誌に言及される事項については、一燈園における所蔵品調査や、交流のあった藤平陶芸に所蔵される同時代の経営資料及び証言の収集などにより、多面的に検証を行った。同時に、刊行された河井の著作の網羅的な収集を継続して行った。また、河井の窯で働き、現在は陶芸家として活動を行う方々にインタビューを行い、文献には記されない事実を確認した。特に、同時代に刊行された生物学の文献と、河井の発言が対応していることから、彼の「生物学的関心」が思想形成において重要であることを明らかにした。一方で戦時下の制作環境については、工芸に関わる統制などの制度や、京都五条坂周辺の住民が置かれた状況を理解することが不可欠である。特に河井もその対象とされた、統制の例外的措置である芸術保存（丸芸）や技術保存（丸技）の政策について、物心両面からその実態調査を進めている。この他、日本民藝館及び安部栄四郎記念館において、河井の書簡調査を行った。前者は柳宗悦宛であり、思索の深化に影響した具体的な私的体験が語られる点で重要である。後者は今後資料整理を行う必要があるが、戦時下の著作において言及された「故郷」との関わりが窺える。こうした調査をもとに、河井の思索の変遷について、機械（「技術観」に対応）・生物学的関心・食と故郷（「生命」概念に対応）という三点から跡付け、口頭発表と論文発表を行った。
