培養新生児ラット心筋細胞を用いて高カリウムイオン(K')環境が模擬虚血による拡張期細胞内カルシウムイオン濃度([Ca^(2+)]i)上昇に及ぼす影響についてCa^(2+)感受性色素であるFluo-4を用いて検討を行った。結果から心筋虚血時に細胞外に蓄積するK^+は、[Ca^(2+)]iの上昇を抑制することが示唆された。Na^+-K^+ポンプ活性の抑制は上昇を促進するが、高K^+環境の保護作用はポンプ抑制下でも認められた。
