人口を変数とみなして世代間衡平性の厚生経済学を研究する。非常に反直観的な結論などの望ましくない帰結を回避するためには,効用の臨界水準を正に設定した上で,臨界水準にもとづく一般化された功利主義によって経済状態を評価すべきことが示された。現在世代の利益と将来世代の利益が家父長的な利他主義によって関連する場合に生ずる全世代の効用関数の間の相互依存関係を研究し,未解決であったレイの表現問題を解いた。
