本研究は、1910-40年代のドイツで、まったく世に出ることなく構成主義的なコラージュを制作し続けた芸術家カール・ワルドマンについて、現在までにその存在が確認されている作品の物性解析・図像分析を行い、それらの編年作業を通じて、両大戦間ヨーロッパ前衛芸術運動史のなかに、この芸術家を位置づけることを目指して始められたものであり、次のような暫定的所見を得るに至った。1)コラージュに関する文献を渉猟しても「ワルドマン」の確かな存在証明は得られなかった。研究者のあいだで「ワルドマン」捏造説が唱えられる所以である。そのため、国内に将来されているミクストメディア・コラージュ作品2点(個人蔵)について、セルロースと有機系素材のサンプルを抽出し、東京大学のタンデム加速器を用いて、放射性炭素の残量の解析を行った。結果、作品に使われている素材は戦前のものであり、真作としての必要条件を満たしていることは判明したものの、材料の固定に使われた有機媒材を分離抽出することが出来ず、真贋判定について結論を得るには至らなかった。2)図像学的な研究では、1930年代の左翼社会主義運動のなかで生み出された同時代のコラージュ作品に較べて、ナチス・ドイツを標的とする政治諷刺、さらには人種、わけてもアジア系人種や、公衆衛生、スポーツ祭典のテーマに、コラージュ作家としての特徴が発揮されており、まさにその点で他の同時代の美術家たちと一線を画していることが判った。とはいえ、1910年代のロシア構成主義、第一次大戦直後のベルリン・ダダ、さらに1920年代後半以降のソヴェト・ロシア生産主義、ポーランドの構成主義の影響を受けた「ワルドマン」作品群と、『ドイツ労働新聞』、『国際赤旗』、『世界の鏡』、『グラフ新報』、『眺望』、『ソ連邦建設』など、独仏露のグラフ雑誌の誌面を飾ったジョン・ハートフィールド、ウンボ、エル・リシツキー、ハンナ・ヘッヒら、同時代のコラージュ作家・フォトモンタージュ作家との、総体における近縁性には否定しがたいものがある。以上のことから、本研究は真贋論争について結論を保留するが、かりに捏造であったとしても、真性の素材を用いた、高い技術、深い学識に基づく贋作であると見なさねばならないことは間違いない。
