项目摘要

ハプスブルク帝国世襲領ガリツィア・ロドメリア王国の首都レンベルクの歴史を、「分水嶺」というキーワードを中心に考察した。他のヨーロッパ、あるいは世界の諸都市と比べると、レンベルクという町には川がないという特異な点がある。しかしこの町の成立史を辿ると、13世紀にハーリチ・ヴォロディーミル王ダニーロが、ポルトヴァ川のほとりにこの町を基礎を築いたと述べられ、氾濫の記録も16世紀以来たびたび記されている。しかし一方では、ポルトヴァ川はたいへん水量の乏しい流れで、夏には干上がり、川と呼ぶには値しないという記述も残されている。いずれにせよ、ポルトヴァ川は、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて、レンベルク市内においては暗渠化され、以来レンベルクは川のない町となったのである。だが、町から川が姿を消してしばらくたった頃、レンベルクが他の都市には類例のないよう仕方で「水」との関わりを持っていることが発見される。すなわち、レンベルクにはバルト海と黒海へと注ぐ流れの分水嶺がある、ということである。埋設されたポルトヴァ川は、ブーク川に注ぎ、ブーク川はヴィスワ川に注ぎ、ヴィスワ川はポーランドを南から北へと縦断しバルト海に注いでいる。他方、レンベルクの西にはドニステル川の支流が幾本も流れ、ドニステル川は、黒海に注いでいる。レンベルクに、バルト海に注ぐ川と黒海に注ぐ川の分水嶺があるということ、すなわちレンベルクはヨーロッパの南北の海に同時に臨んでいるというこの発見は、川を失ったレンベルクの人々の喪失感を補って余りあるものとなった。しかし重要なことは、この「分水嶺」というキーワードは、レンベルクという都市の地勢的特異性を語るためばかりでなく、古来多民族・多文化混住の地であったこの町の文化的特性をも象徴しているということである。
