本研究は真鍋島（岡山県笠岡市）および伊吹島（香川県観音寺市）におけるアクセント変化と変化の要因を明らかにすることを目的とする。この２つの島は伝統的には日本祖語のアクセント型の区別をよく保存していると言われているが、近年アクセント変化が起こっていることも報告されている。平成２４年度は研究実施計画通り、岡山県笠岡市の真鍋島において2回の方言調査を実施した（第１回目の調査：平成２４年９月５～１０日、第２回目の調査：平成２４年１１月２６～２９日）。調査では真鍋島で生え抜きの話者６名（男性：４名、女性：２名）（４０代の話者１名、６０代の話者１名、７０代の話者２名、８０代の話者２名）に協力していただいた。調査語彙は先行研究と同じ語彙を用いて、デジタル録音を行った。調査実施者による調査地での聴覚的な印象では、７０代および８０代の話者４名の名詞のアクセントについては、先行研究と同じアクセント体系をもっていることが明らかとなった。一方、先行研究でアクセント変化あるとされた中学生は現在４０代に当たる。本調査で４０名の話者１名に方言調査を行った結果、聴覚的な印象としては先行研究で言われていたアクセントの変化はないようであった。つまり、７０代および８０代の話者と同じアクセント体系をもっているようであった。しかしながら、この地域に特徴的な音調の変化を調べるためには話者間の声の高さの違いを取り除き、詳細な音響分析を行う必要がある。この音響分析については今後実施していく予定である。
