本研究の目的は、マダガスカル語Tandroy方言の体系的記述を行うことである。Tandroy方言はマダガスカル南端部で話され、約50万人の話者をもつ。危機言語や書記資料の少ない言語の記述、そして口承文芸の記録・録音といった無形財産の保存の重要性が近年国際的に認識されているなか、多くのマダガスカル語方言のドキュメンテーションは従来ほとんど試みられていないといえるのが現状である。特に、マダガスカル語標準語の基盤となっているMerina方言以外のマダガスカル語方言の言語学的記述資料は、非常に少ない。そこで、本研究は、マダガスカル語Tandroy方言を、現地調査で収集した基礎語彙、口承文芸の記録・録音、自然会話の観察、母語話者からの例文の抽出などの一次資料をもとに、体系的な記述を行うことを目的としている。最終年度である本年度はTandroy方言の音声・音韻、動詞カテゴリー、文法の体系の全容を記述・分析し、博士論文として2010年12月にまとめた。また、本研究では、言語の構造的側面のみならず、5年間の研究および、現地での言語調査を通じて明らかとなった、マダガスカルの多言語社会の現状と動態、話者が属する社会の文化、自然現象に関する認識や在来技術とその応用についても取り扱っている。
