本研究の目的は、言語研究の立場から、無文字社会における地域社会固有の"数学的概念"を、オーストロネシア語圏を中心に現地調査を行い、記述・分析することである。現時点では、マダガスカル、インドネシア、仏領ポリネシア、イースター島が提案者の主な現地調査の対象としている。2012年8月より約5ヶ月間、米国ハワイ大学マノア校言語学科に客員研究員として滞在し、当該専門分野の研究者との議論を通じて研鑽を積んだ。昨年度の仏領ポリネシアで行った現地調査で得た資料を整理し、成果の一部を、2012年6月インドネシアで開催された国際オーストロネシア言語学会で発表した。国際オーストロネシア言語学会では、当該分野で世界最先端を行く研究者が世界各国から集結し、学術的ネットワークの構築や情報交換の面でも大変有意義であった。マダガスカル語Tandroy方言の植物利用、色彩語彙、昔のお金の数え方等をまとめ、論文としてまとめた。また、ルルツ語(仏領ポリネシア・オーストラル諸島)に関しては、数の範疇の諸相について、研究ノートをまとめた。2013年3月に京都大学にて、海外から2名の研究者を招聘し、国際研究集会(International Meeting on Austronesian Languages and Cultures : Communication Between Linguists and Ecologists)を企画し、盛況に終わった。主催者として、予稿集の作成、パンフレットの作成、当日の司会進行、口頭発表を行った。本国際研究集会の主催経験は、若手研究者として大変学ぶところの多い良い体験であった。
