本研究では、まず、大坂、渡辺、平野、堺、泉大津、岸和田、尼崎、大物、西宮、兵庫の都市ごとに、自治体史、関連論文、発掘調査報告書などから中世を分析対象とした先行研究を収集し、その文献リストをデータベースとして作成した。この作業を経る中で史料の収集に努め、中世(特に戦国期)の大阪湾地域における港湾都市を中心とする諸都市を総合的に分析し、その支配構造の特質を明らかにしようとした。そして、単に特定地域の港湾都市分析にとどまらず、畿内における戦国期と織豊期の権力研究の断絶状況を克服し、統一政権の成立過程を見通すことに成功した。織田信長以前に室町幕府を前提とせずに畿内支配を展開した三好氏について、四国阿波から畿内に発展する過程と権力の人的構成のあり方を検討した。すなわち、三好氏はその最盛期において、畿内の流通に立脚する国人層を編成し、京都や摂津の中心部を主に支配する三好長慶の三好本宗家と、阿波国人を編成し、河内南部や四国東部を主に支配する長慶の弟実休を中心とした阿波三好家から構成されていることを明らかにした。そして、三好氏が畿内支配にあたり、本国とした摂津の具体的な支配構造を検討した。三好氏に先行する摂津守護細川氏は室町期の荘園制的流通構造において圧倒的な求心力を持つ京都に最も近い摂津東部(「上郡」)の国人編成を重視したのに対し、三好氏は戦国期に荘園制が解体して国人の城下町や浄土真宗及び法華宗の寺内町が興隆した摂津西部(「下郡」)や河内の旧大和川流域の把握に努め、こうした地域に積極的に本城を移転していくことで、流通構造の変化に対応していこうとした。また、戦国期の大阪湾の港湾都市は室町期以来の遠隔地流通の拠点であるだけではなく、周辺地域の経済的中心地の性格も兼ね備えるようになったことを明らかにした。こうした三好政権が、十六世紀半ばには将軍を擁立せず、室町幕府を前提としない畿内支配を展開したため、天皇・朝廷も、将軍ないし将軍候補を擁立しない者とは交渉しないとする従来の姿勢を転換し、三好氏と関係を取り結んだ。天皇は三好氏の要求を入れ、現職の将軍を無視した改元を行うなど、後に朝廷が織田信長と関係を取り結ぶ際の先例をつくった。三好政権は天皇と将軍の公武関係においても転換期に位置する権力であることがわかる。本研究は、大阪市立大学大学院文学研究科COEプログラムの内、「大阪プロジェクト」の研究事業である「比較都市文化史研究」のなかの重要なテーマとして位置づけられ、同COEプログラムと連携して進められた。本研究の成果を盛り込んだ博士学位申請論文「戦国期畿内社会と三好政権」を提出し、学位が授与された。
